Infinity War Directors Tour Wakanda In New Set Photo

The directors of Avengers: Infinity War just shared a photo that appears to be the filming location for Wakanda. The fictional African nation was only mentioned in Iron Man 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, before being depicted on screen for the first time at the end of Captain America: Civil War. Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo, meanwhile, are hard at work filming the sprawling Avengers sequel and its follow-up back-to-back.

Infinity War is sure to feature a wide number of locations in order to accommodate the many heroes (and villains) that will assemble. Wakanda, one of several fictional African countries found in Marvel Comics collections and the home of T’Challa/Black Panther, figures to be one of those locations. If a new photo shared by the Russo brothers is any indication, the backdrop for Wakanda will be one of real-life Africa’s most stunning landscapes.

The Russo brothers shared the new photo to their joint Instagram account on Monday, mentioning in the caption that they are “deep in the Serengeti.” The Serengeti, a vast ecosystem in Tanzania and some parts of Kenya, is home to the world-famous Serengeti National Park and some of the continent’s most diverse wildlife. If any region in Africa would look and feel like an appropriate representation of Wakanda on screen, it would be the Serengeti.

Several commenters pointed out the high likelihood that the Serengeti would be the filming location for Wakanda-based scenes in Infinity War. It certainly appears that the directors are busy shooting scenes, as they are surrounded by what looks like cameras and other equipment. Tanzania would mark the first African filming location for the Russo brothers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after filming The Winter Soldier entirely in the United States and filming parts of Civil War in Germany, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Iceland.

The Serengeti is almost surely the setting for Infinity War’s Wakanda scenes, and it is perhaps the best possible place for the Russo brothers to choose as a filming location. Wakanda will ostensibly play a major role in the narrative of Infinity War and its as-yet untitled sequel. It certainly will for the scenes featuring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, who just recently started filming.

This new photo from the Russo brothers is a fresh indication of how massive the colliding worlds of Infinity War will be, as the movie has a chance to be the MCU’s most epic installment yet. One concern is that Infinity War would ultimately grow too big and overstuffed with characters, which has plagued past comic book movies. But the Russo brothers have already proved they can handle and ensemble cast well, and it appears that they are not holding back on giving the movie a great visual backdrop.
