Warcraft 2 Story Outlined by Director Duncan Jones

If given the opportunity to move forward with another Warcraft film, Duncan Jones has revealed where he would like to take the sequel. At the moment, there’s no word on whether or not the sequel is even going to happen. It’s no secret that Hollywood has struggled over the years to bring video games to life on the big screen. Many people had hoped Jones’ Warcraft adaptation would break the video game movie curse that has plagued the industry for years.

Unfortunately, the movie didn’t score well with critics, earning 28 percent on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, though its audience score of 71 percent pictured a much more positive outlook on the franchise’s potential. Despite moviegoers enjoying the adaptation more than critics did, Warcraft still under-performed at the domestic box office, grossing a measly $47 million, thereby forcing the picture to rely heavily on its international gross of $386 million (thus totalling $433 million worldwide) to turn a profit.

Warcraft had become the highest-grossing video game movie at the worldwide box office, thanks to its performance in China. Considering that the film’s production studio, Legendary Entertainment, was acquired by China’s Wanda Group earlier that year, the notion of China producing a Warcraft sequel became the plausible outcome. While there hasn’t been any update on that front as of yet, if given the chance to move forward with Warcraft 2, Jones already knows where he would want to take the sequel, telling audiences at a recent screening of the film at Prince Charles Cinema in London’s Leicester Square:

“This first film is about establishing the world, and showing Durotan helping his son escape a dying planet. So, to me, the idea over the course of three films would be for Thrall to fulfill that vision of Durotan to create a new homeland for the Orcs. So, it would be the adolescent years of that baby, and anyone who does know their Warcraft stories would know it’s very much a Spartacus story that goes on with that character. I would basically follow that through. And with the human side of it, which is a little less clear of how that would follow, but basically, there is an aftermath to this film which would need to be completed. And on the Orc side you’re very much following that baby, Go’el, known as Thrall in the universe, and how he eventually creates the Orc homeland.”

Although the first installment may not have been the video game movie that many critics were hoping for, Jones successfully managed to create the world of Warcraft on the big screen — and world-building isn’t easy, especially when it comes to launching entirely new franchises. However, the games’ lore is so rich and diverse that it’s nearly impossible to get everything right in one film, and that’s why Jones would like to make a sequel to expand on the mythology that he teased in the first movie.

Jones’ Warcraft was meant to act as a launch pad for what could have been the world’s most profitable video game movie franchise, based on one of the world’s most profitable video games. Judging by the meager reception the first movie received domestically, Universal Pictures may not be keen on investing in another adaptation, nor another video game movie. If Jones does get the chance to helm another Warcraft film, there’s no guaranteeing that it would even release in U.S. theaters.
