IT Remake Will Be Released In IMAX

Stephen King’s IT will receive an IMAX release. Despite how common it is for King’s work to be adapted for film or TV, it’s hard to remember the last time a King adaptation had this much positive buzz heading into its release date. While The Dark Tower just barely managed to edge out 1408 for biggest opening weekend to date for a King-based film, it seems likely that IT might shatter that record by a wide margin.

Of course, director Andy Muschetti’s R-rated take on IT has some big, floppy clown shoes to fill, at least when it comes to how well-known the 1990 TV miniseries adaptation of IT has become, thanks mostly to the arresting performance of genre legend Tim Curry as Pennywise. Thankfully, from the footage shown so far — including the 4-minute extended scene shown prior to Annabelle: Creation screenings — Bill Skarsgård looks fully up to the task of, if not surpassing Curry, then carving out a niche for his own rendition of the character.

No doubt due to how anticipated the 2017 release of has become, producer Barbara Muschetti — Andy’s sister and frequent collaborator — took to Instagram recently to announce that IT will receive the IMAX treatment. On September 8, honorary members of the Losers’ Club everywhere will now get to experience the terrors of Pennywise on a screen that envelops their entire field of vision. One assumes they will all still float on such a large screen.

It’s worth noting, though, that IT was not shot using IMAX cameras, so it won’t quite offer the full effect of the IMAX experience. For those just wanting to watch Pennywise torment the Losers on as large a screen as possible, however, it’s certainly the best option available, and considering the increased interest and popularity of the large-screen format, IT stands a good chance of drawing quite a crowd in IMAX-equipped venues. .

In the meantime, those wishing to get up close and personal with Skarsgård’s psychotic monster clown can tackle the recently released IT: Float – A Cinematic VR Experience on YouTube. The roughly 4-minute experience allows users to do things like re-enact the scene where Pennywise tempts Georgie from the sewer drain, and also later sends users directly into the monster’s underground lair. Yes, balloons are on offer, although it’s probably best not to accept.
