Joss Whedon’s The Avengers solidified MCU’s vision of interconnected storytelling, paving the way to the ever-expanding shared cinematic universe it is now. Prior to the film, there were still a lot of people who were unconvinced that the Hollywood experiment would work despite a couple of well-received standalones. After The Avengers’ 2012 release, Marvel Studios became bolder in their storytelling with the addition of more obscure characters, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. As of now, the MCU has earned $15 billion and become the template for a lot of other film studios who want to build a sustainable brand.

Taking to his official Instagram account, RDJ posted a series of photos and videos revealing that he and four of his other original Avengers castmates got matching tattoos. In the posts, the 52-year-old is seen in the process of getting inked, alongside the reveal of the design they all chose: The iconic “A” logo of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes layered on top of the number “6” – symbolizing the six pioneering heroes of the MCU. In the final video – which also features Jeremy Renner (whose character, Hawkeye, skipped Infinity War), Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet Johansson and the artist, Joshua Lord – the actor sent a shoutout to Chris Evans, who wasn’t there but also got the same tattoo. The actors tell Evans they miss him – until Hemsworth jokingly say they have all the Chris they need. Additionally, Evans shared a video of his own on Twitter. Check out the uploads below.

In an interview with EW, Downey Jr. revealed that it was Johansson’s idea for them to all get all inked, which the four other guys eventually agreed on, except Mark Ruffalo. As it turns out, it all happened in batches and in return, the artist received a collaborative tattoo from all of them.

“Five of the original six Avengers got a tattoo. And the sixth was the tattoo artist, who gave it to five of us, the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo. It was (Scarlett) Johansson’s idea, and she and (Chris) Evans did it in New York. Then, their New York guy, Josh Lord, who is amazing, flew out to LA, he did me, did (Jeremy) Renner, and then we just bullied (Chris) Hemsworth into doing it, and he got it. And each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun and it was a total massacre. Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us. By the way, he’s got another one on him that Scarlett did, which is beautiful, which is crazy, because the line she drew on him, which was just supposed to be a straight line, looked like a lightning bolt. It was a mess.”

It may have been six years since the original six Avengers came together to save the day in the MCU, but it’s not a coincidence that the core group survived Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War. Next year’s Avengers 4 is expected to assemble the Phase 1 heroes as they band together, perhaps for the last time, as they attempt to avenge the universe from Thanos’ intergalactic mass murder. It’s no secret that the all six actors’ contracts are done after the still-untitled flick, and while renegotiation is always a possibility, chances are that not all of them will be back for more Marvel films, at least in the next several years.
