WARNING: The following article contains SPOILERS through season 3 of Legends Of Tomorrow.
A new poster and synopsis have revealed the team line-up in the upcoming fourth season of DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow. Unlike previous seasons, which were notable for who was added into the show at the start of the season, this one is notable for who seems to be missing.
The third season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow saw the titular Legends butting heads with a newly established Time Bureau. Founded by former Legends’ leader Captain Rip Hunter, the Time Bureau was officious and more concerned with maintaining order than doing good whenever anachronisms threatened the stability of the timeline. Despite this, they came to depend upon the Legends unorthodox brand of help, particularly in the face of Mallus – a demon trapped within time itself, whose impending escape threatened all of reality.
Though the Legends did defeat Mallus in the end, the victory did not come without cost. The final scene of the season 3 finale revealed that Mallus’ escape only heralded the release of other magical creatures best left buried. This revelation is discussed in more detail in the season 4 synopsis released by The CW, which can be read below the show’s poster for next season.
After defeating the demon Mallus by cuddling him to death with a giant stuffed animal named Beebo, the Legends are ready to ease off the gas. Sara (Caity Lotz) and her team join Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) and the Time Bureau to help clean up the last few remaining anachronisms. The job seems straightforward enough until Constantine (Matt Ryan) arrives to inform them that, in solving one major problem, they have created another, much larger one. When the Legends let time crumble in order to release and defeat Mallus, the barrier between worlds softened. History is now infected with “Fugitives” – magical creatures from myths, fairytales, and legends. Having been expelled throughout time by people like Constantine, these Fugitives are now returning to our world in droves and making a real mess of things. As the Time Bureau is distrustful of and ill-equipped to deal with magic, the Legends must team up with everyone’s favorite demonologist to set history back on track.
Sara and Constantine are joined by compassionate inventor Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), hotheaded ex-con Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), rebellious totem-bearer Zari (Tala Ashe), and heartbroken historian-turned-superhero Nate (Nick Zano) as they set out to save the world – and their legacy. It’s the familiar fun of the Legends time-travelling across historical events and encountering famous figures with an added shot of magical craziness!
Curiously, the poster does not include Jes Macallan as Ava Sharpe, who was already confirmed as a regular character for Season 4. While this might be explained away by Ava being the head of the Time Bureau and Sara Lance’s girlfriend but not being a member of the Legends, it does not explain the presence of Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya Jiwe (a.k.a. Vixen), who is not mentioned in the synopsis.
Amaya, who formed a romantic relationship with historian Nate Heywood during their time together, was forced to abandon her love and return to her homeland of Zambesi in 1942. This was necessary due to the need to preserve the timeline and ensure that Amaya’s granddaughters, who share the Vixen title in the modern day Arrowverse, were born. Despite this, many speculated the series was not yet done with Amaya – a suspicion that seems to have been confirmed by the poster.
Another curious omission is that of actor Keiynan Lonsdale and his character, Wally West. Known as Kid Flash, the speedster joined the Legends shortly after meeting Rip Hunter in China. It’s possible that Wally may be rejoining the cast of The Flash, but with its season 4 finale not airing for another week, The CW has yet to release any information regarding its fifth season or its cast. Time, as is usually the case when DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are concerned, will tell.
