Sony’s upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse unveils additional Spider-Man characters at San Diego Comic-Con 2018: Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham and Peni Parker. Sony Pictures has a number of Spider-Man related projects in the works at the moment. In addition to their upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home – made in partnership with Marvel Studios – Sony is developing quite a few live-action movies. Venom is set to arrive later this year, while Silver Sable/Black Cat, Morbius the Living Vampire and more projects are also in the works. Still, Sony is also gearing up to release an animated Spider-Man tale with Into the Spider-Verse.
Written by LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse focuses on the young Miles Morales – however he’s not the only wall-crawling hero to appear in the movie, not by a long shot. The trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced not only an alternate universe version of Peter Parker, but Gwen Stacy aka. Spider-Gwen. Now, additional heroes set to appear in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been unveiled.
Sony announced more cast members of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at the studio’s SDCC panel through the footage they screened. Spider-Man Noir will be voiced by Nicolas Cage, Spider-Ham by comedian John Mulaney and Peni Parker by Kimiko Glenn. They join Shameik Moore as Miles, Jake Johnson as Peter, and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen. The reveal of Cage as Spidey Noir was previously reported prior to the official confirmation at Comic-Con.
Based on reactions to the footage for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse out of Comic-Con, Spider-Ham is expected to be a scene-steeler, and with Mulaney lending his voice to the character, that comes as little surprise. The comedian has become well known for his Netflix comedy specials, in which he uses his voice to great effect. Further, fans will no doubt be pleased by the confirmation of Cage as Spider-Man Noir since his voice makes sense for the character. This will also be the actor’s second animated superhero movie to premiere in 2018, with Cage voicing Superman in Teen Titans GO! to the Movies. Lastly of the newly announced cast members, Glenn may be familiar to TV fans for her role in Orange is the New Black, but she’s also done a fair share of voice work on Bojack Horseman and Voltron: Legendary Defender.
As of now, there are at least six confirmed Spider-People set to appear in Into the Spider-Verse, which should make for an interesting and altogether different kind of Spidey story than what fans have seen in the live-action movies. Of course, the fact that Into the Spider-Verse puts Miles front and center would inherently make the movie different to any of those that previously focused on Peter Parker. Still, with all the Spidey characters and a different web-head at the forefront – not to mention the animated visuals of the film – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks to stand apart from all other Spider-Man movies, live-action or not.
