Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Roller Coaster Gets Behind the Scenes Video

Disney Parks has shared a behind the scenes video of their new Guardians of the Galaxy–themed roller coaster. The coaster will be part of Future World in the Epcot park at Walt Disney World. Once completed, it will be one of the world’s longest indoor coasters. The addition was announced at the D23 Expo held in Tokyo back in February, and it looks like construction for the coaster is finally underway.

The new Guardians themed coaster joins a number of other Marvel rides in Disney theme parks around the world. Hong Kong Disneyland was home to the first Marvel themed ride with the Iron Man Experience, a 3D ride where guests help Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) fight off an alien attack at the Stark Expo. The park is also getting a new Ant-Man and the Wasp attraction. Disney’s California Adventure park itself boasts the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! ride; the elevator drop ride is an update to the classic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror that turned the old hotel into the Collector’s (Benicio del Toro) vault. After seeing success with these attractions, Disney Parks decided to go all out with California Adventure by establishing an entire Marvel themed land set to open in 2020, which will also include Spider-Man and Avengers-themed rides.

Disney Parks shared an official video today detailing just how much effort goes into building a new theme park ride, especially an indoor roller coaster. According to the video, over 300 people worked with 960 truckloads of concrete and 80.4 miles of rebar to lay the foundation of the ride which is about the size of three Olympic-sized swimming pools. The whole process took 17 hours.

The Disney Parks Blog announced that the Guardians themed ride will, “Expand on the original vision of Epcot’s Future World, with an epic storyline being developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in close collaboration with the original filmmakers.” This seems to include director and writer James Gunn, who has helmed both Guardians films thus far and is currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Here’s his reaction on Twitter:

While parkgoers can meet Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, and Black Widow in the Disney Parks, none of them have their own rides just yet. It’s amazing to think that the once obscure Guardians of the Galaxy now has two Disney Park rides to their name. It goes to show the power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has in making little known comic book characters household names. And now, after the success of Avengers: Infinity War, there are only a few who don’t know the names Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and of course, Groot.
