Disney’s live-action Dumbo remake has officially added Game of Thrones‘ DeObia Oparei to the cast. The English actor is best known for his role on Thrones as Areo Hotah, captaining Prince Doran Martell’s guards. Tim Burton’s Dumbo already boasts a deep cast that includes Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton, and Eva Green.
Dumbo recently began filming, revealing a beaming Burton on set aboard the “Casey Jr.” train. The director, who is also developing the long-awaited Beetlejuice 2, most recently made Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which was underwhelming at the domestic box office but ended up with $296 million worldwide. He has a great chance to top that with Dumbo, which just revealed some new information on the cast of characters.
Oparei became the latest confirmed addition to the Dumbo cast, according to a report by Deadline. The report revealed DeObia’s role as a man named “Rongo”, but gave no further details about the character. Farrell is confirmed to play Holt, a former circus star who ends up taking care of the titular elephant with the oversized yet powerful ears. DeVito will play circus owner Medici, while Keaton and Green will play the villainous duo that attempts to take advantage of Dumbo’s extraordinary talents.
Though he is best known for playing Areo Hotah in seasons 5-6 of Game of Thrones, Oparei is also known for his appearances in recent movies like Independence Day: Resurgence, Dredd, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Doom. His movie career goes as far back as when he was credited as Dhobi Oparei as Arthur in David Fincher’s Alien 3. Oparei’s latest TV appearance came in Netflix’s new horror-comedy series Santa Clarita Diet.
It’s nearly impossible to figure out any details about Oparei’s character based on simply the name “Rongo”. He could be a hero or a villain. He could be playing a bodyguard of some kind, if the casting is in any way influenced by his performance as Areo Hotah. Or he could simply be a circus performer. Whatever direction Burton takes the role of Rongo, Oparei’s addition to the cast is a welcome one and potentially exciting for Game of Thrones fans.
Disney is betting big that Burton will deliver another box office success, after 2010’s Alice in Wonderland took in over $1 billion worldwide. They will be hoping for a similar return, certainly one that approaches Disney’s other recent live-action remakes like Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book. Disney’s recent track record, Burton’s pedigree, and a talented cast have Dumbo on the right track.
