Everything Wrong With Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them Video MovieRipe
CinemaSins has targeted J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in their latest video, detailing “everything wrong” with the Harry Potter prequel. The YouTube channel has almost 2 billion views and is notorious for delivering cutting analyses of mainstream movies and concluding with tallies of how many “sins” those movies have racked up. Some fare better than others, with last year’s Deadpool receiving a fittingly ironic treatment from the CinemaSins crew, scoring just 90 sins. Unfortunately for Potterheads, Fantastic Beasts didn’t fare so well.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was generally praised upon release, but it wasn’t without some obvious flaws. There was always a sense that Warner Bros. was milking J.K. Rowling’s beloved franchise, a fact that was recently flagged up by the Fantatsic Beasts Honest Trailers – and now by CinemaSins.

The latest CinemaSins video critiques the “cash cow” prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, describing it as “the wonderful world of Harry Potter, now with 100% less Harry Potter!” While the video (see above) attacks several plot elements and flags up perceived magical errors that most Harry Potter fans will be quick to clear up, many of the criticisms align with the general critical consensus of Fantastic Beasts; most notably, the way director David Yates handles the reveal of the movie’s true villain.

Gellert Grindelwald was always believed to be the villain of this prequel pentology, and while Fantastic Beasts establishes a world overshadowed by the dark wizard’s presence, his actual role in the film is crudely disguised until the closing moments. The casting of Johnny Depp was already controversial but his surprising inclusion at the end of the movie was more than a little jarring, leaving many viewers uncertain about his zany interpretation of the character. After Colin Farrell’s stellar portrayal of the authoritative villain Percival Graves, Depp’s brief introduction fell somewhat flat and it’s now been confirmed that Farrell isn’t returning in future Fantastic Beasts movies.

The Wizarding World is coming to the big screen once again next year with Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them 2 exploring Grindelwald’s rise to power and rivalry with Albus Dumbledore. Jude Law is playing the young Dumbledore, leading to instant debate as to whether or not Law is the right for the role. One comment on CinemaSins’ feed actually recommended that Fantastic Beasts receive an extra sin purely because of this casting news. These two controversial casting choices alone are likely to come under fire in the unavoidable CinemaSins’ Everything Wrong With Fantastic Beasts 2 video when the sequel arrives.

It’s worth noting that CinemaSins considers their venture comedic in nature and they’ve even devoted a video to lampooning themselves and their own channel. Any and all criticisms are subjective, and most of them are mere tongue-in-cheek comments. Namely: “f*ck this suitcase and everything it represents“.
