Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Concept Art Shows Martinex Designs

Newly released concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 reveals the work that went into bringing Martinex to life. The character, who appears in the Guardians 3000 comic series as one of the original Guardians, was played by Michael Rosenbaum in a very minor cameo role in Vol. 2 as a member of Stakar Ogord’s (Sylvester Stallone) Ravagers team. Rosenbaum had previously auditioned to play Star-Lord in the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Since Martinex is essentially a background character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, you might think that there wouldn’t be too much detail put into the design of the character. That is not the case, as freelance concept artist Ian Joyner just shared some previously unreleased artwork that shows the final design for Martinex before his appearance in Vol. 2.

Joyner posted two new photos to his Twitter account, as he revealed the final concepts for Martinex’s brief appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The photos show a very similar-looking Martinex to the one that ends up in the finished version of Vol. 2, showing off a highly detailed rendering of the character’s distinctive crystalline skin. The artwork comes out a couple of weeks after another artist revealed an alternate design for Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha.

Martinex shows up in two scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. First, he can be seen standing behind Stakar as he confronts Yondu (Michael Rooker) in an early scene. He pops up again in a mid-credits scene featuring Stakar and other members of his team, teasing an adventure of their own. His skin enables him to withstand extreme weather conditions and he can also shoot either cold or hot beams from his left or right hand, but Vol. 2 obviously never gave him a chance to show what he’s capable of doing with his powers.

Having worked as an artist in Hollywood for over 15 years, Joyner is no stranger to working on Marvel characters. He is officially credited with working on The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man 2, and Thor. He most recently lent his talents to Power Rangers, Suicide Squad, and, of course, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. His work on Martinex may have resulted in just a bit character in the context of the movie, but it’s an indication of both his impressive talents and the amount of work that went into doing justice to the movie’s many unique characters.

The concept art for Martinex is so strikingly rendered, it almost gives rise to hope for a bigger role for the character. That may not be likely, although Stakar and his crew could see expanded roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But for now, fans can enjoy Joyner’s committed effort to create one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s more obscure characters for the big screen.
