Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 pays tribute to another space opera sequel in a new poster for the film. In just a few days, the sequel to Marvel’s hit cosmic romp will land in North American theaters and give audiences a chance to catch up with their favorite altruistic scoundrels. Already, the film is doing well in the international market, opening to $106 million this past weekend. As for its potential domestic haul, the movie is outpacing Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s second biggest debut and the fourth largest of all time. All told, Marvel and Disney look to have a another hit on their hands.
Of course, that hasn’t slowed down the marketing for the new movie. For weeks now, the stars of the film have been doing the rounds, teasing the past, present, and future of the franchise and their careers. The cast has offered details on Gamora’s crucial role in Guardians 3, as well as a bit more about the Guardians’ presence in Avengers: Infinity War. Meanwhile, Chris Pratt recently reminisced about auditioning for the lead in Superman Returns. Most of the attention, however, has been on this week’s sequel.
In a fun new bit of promotion, director James Gunn just tweeted out a fan-made poster for the Guardians 2 from artist Matt Ferguson. In it, Ferguson pays tribute to The Empire Strikes Back, down to the smallest of details.
In the poster, Star-Lord and Gamora take the place of Han and Leia, with Rocket and Groot loosely standing in for Luke riding a tauntaun. Behind them, Drax, Nebula, and Yondu occupy the spot of Chewy, R2, and 3PO, the Milano stands in for some X-wings, and Ego looms large where Darth Vader did in the original poster. The whole thing even features the painterly style of the image it pays tribute to.
Thanks to the comedic nature of the film, we can likely expect a lot more pop-culture-referencing homages such as this. Just last week, we saw a TV spot for the film in the style of an ’80’s sitcom, so it’s safe to assume more tributes along these lines are in the works. All in all, they serve as fun and fresh ways to promote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, highlighting its heart, humor, and the debt it owes to media from the past. Now all we need is that Guardians Christmas special Gunn says he wants to make.
