Hulk Looks Like Thor in New Ragnarok Concept Art

Newly released Thor: Ragnarok concept art shows Hulk looking very Thor-like. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok was a massive blockbuster out of the gate for Disney and Marvel Studios in November, earning $122.7 million domestically in its opening weekend. Currently winding down its highly successful theatrical run, the film through Wednesday has earned nearly $312 million stateside, which combined with a $537 million take overseas, has a running global cume of $849 million.

Apart from a huge departure in tone from its predecessors Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok featured the return of The God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the trio’s absence from the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Thor, who customarily sports a blond mane, did so at the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok, until he lost his locks under protest when he became imprisoned on junk planet of Sakaar. Unbeknownst to Thor, that was the first of many surprises he would encounter on the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum), as the close shave was merely one of the preparations made for his gladiator-style battle in the Contest of Champions that turned out to be Hulk.

As it turns out, Thor: Ragnarok had the potential of a role-reversal, at least hairstyle-wise, involving Thor and Hulk. In a tweet by Ryan Meinerding Thursday, the character designer, concept artist and Marvel Studios head of Visual Development revealed some alternate hairstyles for the mean green one for the film. See the different hairstyle alternatives the artist conceptualized for Hulk in the tweet below:

While Hulk ended up sporting essentially the same hairdo that fans are used to seeing in other MCU adventures, Meinerding explored a few different styles, including the standard Hulk cut, one where his head is shaved on the sites and another with a tighter crop on top. The style that’s dramatically different from the rest, though, features Hulk with a shoulder-length mane and facial hair, much similar to the look we’re used to seeing on Thor.

Naturally, it would have been a funny sight gag if Waititi would have ended up going with the long-haired look for Thor, as by the time the characters would have met in the film, Hulk would have been the heir-apparent to Thor’s hairstyle. From a story standpoint, a different look – long or short hair – would have completely been in line with Hulk’s subplot, where his dominant matches in the Contest of Champions on Sakaar made him a pretty big deal. He was already living in a swank apartment, had a Hulk-sized bed and hot tub, so why would they have denied him his own personal hairstylist?

It’s always fun when concept artists from films share their original visions with fans on social media, and Meinerding’s artwork for Hulk’s alternate hairdos is no different. At the very least, it gives us a quick and entertaining peek into what might have been, and with any luck, there will be a lot more Thor: Ragnarok concept art to come to further stir our imaginations.
