Jason Momoa, star of the upcoming The Crow reboot from director Corin Hardy, teased the start of production on the long in development film. The Crow was originally created as a comic book series by James O’Barr that was first published in 1989, but many know of the vengeful character from the 1994 movie directed by Alex Proyas and starring the late Brandon Lee – who passed away after an injury suffered on set. The film became a cult classic and inspired a direct sequel, The Crow: City of Angels, which was then followed by a handful of direct-to-video followups.
Given the popularity of The Crow character, a remake/reboot of Eric Draven’s story has been in various stages of development for almost 10 years. A number of stars have been attached to the project, including Dracula Untold’s Luke Evans, X-Men’s James McAvoy, Ben-Hur’s Jack Huston, and Thor: Ragnarok’s Tom Hiddleston. The film has seen a similar rotating door of directors, but Hardy has been attached to The Crow since 2014, with Momoa joining as Eric Draven in 2016. Now it seems their upcoming reboot if finally taking a major step forward.
On Instagram, Momoa teased production on The Crow is set to start soon by posting some artwork of The Crow – which appears to be taken from the fan poster created by LostMind – and a photo of himself with Hardy. In the caption, Momoa wrote, “I’ve been waiting for sooooo long. [Corin Hardy] let’s do this brother,” indicating they’re going to get to work on The Crow very soon. Take a look:
It was recently revealed by comic creator O’Barr that The Crow will start production in February 2018, first beginning with pre-production and presumably filming a little later in the year. Momoa has seemingly confirmed that timeline with his latest social media post. Currently he’s still on the promotional tour for his upcoming DC Comics team-up, Justice League, which hits theaters this week. Even if he were to take a short break after wrapping up promotional duties for Justice League, The Crow will need to start early next year and film before the actor has to head out on the Aquaman solo movie promotional tour in the later half of 2018.
News that Hardy and Momoa will finally get to start work on The Crow reboot will come as a relief to fans looking forward to their take on the story of Eric Draven – a man who was killed violently, along with his fiancée, by members of a gang, but who is resurrected by a crow in order to seek vengeance. Of course, the original The Crow movie is beloved thanks to its cult status, and many think a reboot is unnecessary, including director Proyas.
Still, Momoa’s star has been on the rise in recent years, thanks to his one-season turn on HBO’s Game of Thrones and role as Aquaman in Warner Bros’ DC Films universe. Given his talents, especially when it comes to action films, he could bring a compelling new take to the Eric Draven story. Hardy additionally has a knack for horror, with The Hallow and The Conjuring spinoff The Nun under his belt. Together, Hardy and Momoa could produce a worthy reboot – and with work set to begin on the project soon, fans are one step closser to getting to see what becomes of this new take on The Crow.
