Most people will know John Barrowman for his turn as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood, as well as playing Malcolm Merlyn on The CW shows, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. But Barrowman also has a strong musical theater pedigree, having started his career in London’s West End.
To date, Barrowman has appeared in Anything Goes, The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, and Godspell, to name but a few. In recent years, however, his work has mainly been on TV, with few opportunities for showcasing his singing and dancing talent; until The Flash/ Supergirl musical crossover happened, that is. But Barrowman still has an itch that needs to be scratched, and he’s setting his sights on the House of Mouse.
Speaking at Fan Expo in Dallas, Barrowman responded eagerly when asked if he’d ever consider a role in one of Disney’s many live-action remakes (via Comicbook.com):
“I’d love to do a Disney live action movie. I really would. It’s just a question of what ones they’re going to do now because of the massive success they’ve had with Beauty and the Beast, which I thought was awesome. I sat like a kid in a candy store watching it.”
For Barrowman to be excited over something musical is pretty commonplace, but there’s no denying that Beauty and the Beast was the cause of great excitement for many; the movie has enjoyed massive success at the box office already and looks set to make $1 billion easily during its run. It’s little wonder, then, that a seasoned musical performer and someone with such a fun outlook on life as Barrowman, would want to be a part of that – but what character would he play?
“I don’t know [which character I would want to play]. I don’t have an answer to that, but it’s always been a dream of mine to be in a Disney film. And whether it’s a voice, or if it was Disney live action, so because of that movie, I think there’s going to be plenty of Disney live action movies coming out, maybe with animated animals, all that sort of stuff. I don’t know. But fingers crossed.”
Disney currently has a vast slate of live-action remakes, or sequels, underway. Mary Poppins Returns is currently filming in London, but there’s also remakes of The Lion King, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Dumbo lined up, along with The Jungle Book 2, Maleficent 2, as well as Cruella, and a new live-action Winnie the Pooh story, too.
Could Barrowman be the bear of very little brain? Well, that’s unlikely, but he has previously played the Beast on stage in the West End production of Beauty and the Beast, so he’s no stranger to Disney musicals. A role in Aladdin or The Little Mermaid could beckon, perhaps? In fact, let’s face it, Barrowman was made for something like this, so let’s hope Disney is listening.
