The first season of Marvel’s Inhumans ended in early November ABC has yet to renew or cancel the show. However, this doesn’t mean that news of the show’s cancellation isn’t coming. Though no decision has been announced, ABC has acknowledged that the series failed to live up to expectations.
Originally planned as a movie for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Inhumans was dropped from the slate in early 2016. Following the cancellation of Agent Carter, it was announced that Inhumans would be developed as an eight-episode TV series instead and was to debut its two-hour premiere in IMAX theaters. Prior to its release, Inhumans received a great deal of negative hype from the media who lambasted its trailer and special effects. Inhumans ended up being considered the MCU’s first major failure.
At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, ABC boss Channing Dungey talked about the chances of renewal for both of its Marvel shows, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Inhumans. Dungey was optimistic about a season 6 for S.H.I.E.L.D., but on the topic of Inhumans, Dungey voiced only disappointment. Dungey didn’t confirm the show’s cancellation, but claimed that the series didn’t perform at the level they wanted:
We haven’t made any official decision yet about what we’re going to pick up in May, but I will say that the numbers, unfortunately, were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be.
Inhumans, Marvel’s third TV series on the network, brought in disappointing numbers all season. The Inhumans season finale matched its series low, which darkened already dim hopes for the show’s future. Averaging 4.1 million viewers and 1.2 in the demo, Inhumans was treated badly by critics and became a sore subject for higher-ups at Marvel, including Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige who had to dodge questions about Inhumans‘ failure to attract an audience.
Despite the fact that showrunner Scott Buck had plans for the show to continue for at least two more seasons, the outlook has been always been grim. At the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ming-Na Wen seemed to suggest that Inhumans had been cancelled.
Unless ABC makes a shocking decision, it appears that an announcement of Inhumans‘ cancellation is on the horizon. It remains to be seen if ABC will continue any of the characters’ stories in a crossover with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
