New Mutants Poster Brings Fear to the X-Men Universe

on

The latest poster for The New Mutants doesn’t shy away from the film’s horror trappings. With it looking more and more likely that Disney is buying 20th Century Fox, the future of the X-Men on the big screen is up in the air. For now, however, Fox is moving forward with their most ambitious strategy to date – releasing three films in 2018. Kicking things off will be their first real gamble since Deadpool, as The New Mutants make their way from page to screen in the first superhero horror film.

The first trailer for The New Mutants didn’t offer much in terms of story, but it seems clear the movie will be a small and self-contained thriller focusing on a young crop of mutants. Stuck in an asylum, they’ll face their fears and themselves. What’s more, it’s clear that the villainous Demon Bear from the comics will also be stalking the kids. Despite the physical danger, however, much of the movie will traffic in the psychological terror that surrounds the teens as they work through their trauma and their burgeoning mutant powers.

The New Mutants Twitter released a new poster for next spring’s film, showcasing the story’s central conflict. While the movie will have a more supernatural angle than we’ve seen in other X-Men movies, the characters will also be facing plenty of internal demons as well as outside forces.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done extraordinarily well by placing their heroes in different genre settings. While Deadpool leaned far into irreverent comedy and Logan played out like a prestige road trip film, The New Mutants will be Fox’s first attempt to dive fully into a specific genre. What’s more, the last superhero film to even try their hand at horror was the pre-MCU Blade trilogy.

Considering the popularity of Wesley Snipe’s Blade and how long it’s been since those films came out, it’s certainly the right time to delve into horror. The New Mutants will also take things a step further by dealing with the more cerebral aspects of the genre and touching on different supernatural elements. And like any story involving mutants, the struggles of aging into adulthood will go hand-in-hand with the issues the characters are working through.

While The New Mutants won’t benefit from well-known characters, its cast of up-and-coming actors and its unique look and feel should help to bring in some non-traditional moviegoers when it comes to a comic book film. With any luck, The New Mutants will be a success and the X-Men world will continue to push into new genres.
